Cunard Cruises

Cunard has a long and storied past, dating back 150 years mostly for its famous transatlantic crossings. After 2000 the line's only vessel making transatlantic crossings was the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2.

From 2004 the "QE2's" service focused on the annual world cruise and Mediterranean sailings, while the transatlantic route was taken over by the new RMS Queen Mary 2, the first ocean liner to be built in 30 years and the largest passenger liner ever built! Today it is still the largest liner ever built (but not the largest passenger ship).

Cunard

In 1998, Cunard became one of a number of lines owned by Carnival Corporation. As of January 1, 2005 the Cunard name still appears on the side of Queen Mary 2 and sails under the Cunard brand, but it is controlled by Princess Cruises in California.

As of December 2007 there will be three ships:

  • Queen Elizabeth 2
  • Queen Mary 2
  • Queen Victoria

Queen Elizabeth 2

During almost 40 years of service, the QE2 has travelled the world and now operates predominantly as a cruise ship, sailing out of Southampton, England. She will be retired from active service in late 2008, and replaced in the Cunard fleet by MS Queen Victoria.

Queen Mary 2

Queen Mary 2 is the largest, longest, tallest and widest passenger ship ever conceived. It is fitting that this is so, because the linehas a long tradition of creating ships which command the superlative in comparison to all others. Queen Mary 2 was the first passenger liner purpose-built for trans-Atlantic service in 35 years. Queen Mary 2 attracts a wide range of passengers -- in addition to English, German and French can be heard widely spoken onboard. One of the nicest pleasures of a crossing is the luxury of time. And that means time to indulge in spa sessions or exercise. Even with high expectations, I was wowed by its fitness facilities! In Canyon Ranch's first-ever at-sea spa, there are 20,000 square ft. of space on two different decks.

Queen Victoria

Now under construction is a new third ship, an all new 85,000-ton cruise ship which is scheduled to enter service in December 2007, it is named Queen Victoria. Dedicated to the British cruise market, Queen Victoria will be the second largest ever built.

Together with the current flagship, Queen Elizabeth 2, and Queen Mary 2, the biggest passenger liner ever, the fleet will include three Queens for the first time.
