Mexico vacations

Mexico's rich culture began to rise during the Mesoamerican Golden Age between 300 AD and 900 AD. In this era political, intellectual and urban development was established, especially by the Teotihuacan and Mayan peoples. These peoples assumed leadership and established religion by erecting temples and pyramids to worship their sun, moon, water and fire cult gods and cult goddesses and the Teotihuacán’s "plumed serpent". Teotihuacan, known as the ‘City of the Gods’, was built 30-miles northeast of present-day Mexico City.

At its height, Teotihuacan was home to a populace of more than 100,000. Its people were thought to be the first to write books, establish a numerical system and bring the 260-day sacred calendar to Mesoamerica.

Mexico is a paradise. Few countries offer the diversity of Mexico's surreal deserts, snow-capped mountains, ancient ruins, sleepy colonial towns, and modern cities. Mexico has a long, rich history dating back long before the Spanish explorers' arrival. Planted firmly between Central America and the US, Mexico presents fascinating contrast between the old and the new. Even the shortest of visits will open your eyes to the extraordinary history and culture of Mexico, and in particular Mexico City—the oldest continuously inhabited city in North America, where so much action continues to unfold.

Mexico City
A trip to the ancient city of Teotihuacan is a must. Located 35 miles northeast of downtown, this was the first great city of the New World. The origins of the people who built it are a matter of speculation. It was founded around 150 B.C. and rose to its greatest height of cultural and religious significance from A.D. 100 to A.D. 600. The city fell into sharp decline around A.D. 650, but the reasons why are also shrouded in mystery. Architectural highlights include the Street of the Dead, La Ciudadela (the Citadel), and the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon. Spend your first day in the charming district of Coyoacan, taking in museums that celebrate modern legends of art and history. Among your choices are the Museo Frida Kahlo, Museo Leon Trotsky, and ex-Convento de Churubusco, home to the bizarre Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, which offers a definitive history of foreign interventions on local soil.

When should you go?
Travelers who are looking to avoid jam-packed cities should avoid Mexico's southern coast between July and September. This is peak season for North American spring break and for European travel. From October to May the weather is temperate and the tourist numbers die down so rates drop slightly. This is even truer from December to February when the weather is chilly. If tourists are many you'll have to nab a room anywhere you can. In low season you can be more selective. Note: Area hotels are most crowded and most expensive on weekends. The best deals are offered midweek, so you might want to change your flight times to reflect these great rates. Remember that you win twice because flights are also cheaper mid-week.
